Modern     Contemporary      Lyrical      Jazz

...What is the difference between these dance forms?

If you have watched the TV shows "So You Think You Can Dance" or "America's Best Dance Crew" you will see amazing choreography that integrates many dance forms and technique.  Many ballet companies also cross over into the contemporary and hip hop arenas now as well, so dancers are encouraged to expose themselves and study many different dance forms and styles.

Dress Code For Lyrical/Modern/Contemporary/Jazz:

Girls: Any solid colored leotard (please have a black leotard in your supply), footless tights or form fitting shorts or stretch pants, bare feet for modern, dance paws allowed for lyrical, black jazz shoes for jazz.  Hair must be pulled back securely away from the face.  Boys:  Black leotard or tee shirt tucked in,  black tights or cotton stretchy pants,  black jazz shoes.

All dress should allow for the teacher to help facilitate proper body placement for the student.

Modern:  In the early 1900s a few dancers in Europe started to rebel against the rigid constraints of Classical Ballet. Shedding classical ballet technique, costume and shoes, these early modern dance pioneers practiced 'free dance.'  Modern dance is about 100 years old.  Late 1800's-Early 1900's Isadora Duncan, 1900's Martha Graham, 1940's Jose Limon, 1950's Paul Taylor... These are just a few of the pioneers of modern dance to help lay the foundations for what it has become today.  Modern classes here at IDT are best fit for classically trained dancers.  The classes emphasize athleticism, combining elements of a ballet class and freedom of movement utilizing floor work, complex combinations and grand movement.  Students are exposed to interpretive and improvisational movement as well.

Modern IV/V  Placement by Level. Students must be registered in ballet IV or V or have equivalent dance experience, approved by the instructor.

Modern II/III  Ages 10+  New level for 2009 - 10, for students registered in ballet level III or equivalent, as approved by the instructor.

Contemporary  This name is given to 20th century concert dance forms and is based on a collection of modern and postmodern styles.  Unlike classical ballet, contemporary dance often utilizes ground work and the dancers often perform in bare feet.  The technique is still developing based on many previous modern forms and the continuing study of the mind body relationship.  Contemporary Ballet would also integrate the use of pointe work and extreme technique and ability of the classical dancer, both using turn out and parallel legs and extension, for example.

Lyrical  A fusion of Jazz and Ballet, expressive and interpretive of the music.  Boys: Black or white leotard, black tights or cotton stretchy pants or shorts, bare feet.

Jazz: Jazz is a true American art form and is an ever evolving dance form full of life, energy and rhythm in different styles such as Broadway, Latin, classical jazz or funk. Classes explore body isolations of the head, shoulders, ribcage, feet and arms and encourage individual expression and the development of each student's personal style.
